What is the Uinta Headwaters Resource Conservation and Development Council?

The Uinta Headwaters Resource Conservation and Development Council is a community-based, nonprofit organization.  Ongoing assistance helps citizens sustainably manage and protect natural resources while improving economic and environmental standards.  The Council works in Summit, Utah, and Wasatch Counties and is governed by a volunteer board of local residents.

How does the Uinta Headwaters Council benefit communities?

The Council works with local citizens and groups to develop grassroots projects that promote community through responsible management of natural resources.  Technical assistance and funding for projects is established through partnerships among organizations and volunteers.  The Council, as a nonprofit 501 (c) 3 organization, may also accept donations, grants, and other contributions to implement projects.

What type of projects does the Uinta Headwaters Council do?

The Council works on a wide variety of projects in natural resource conservation and community development.  In the past, the Council has promoted projects concerning heritage tourism, renewable energy, community fire plans, noxious weed control and native seed distribution.

What projects is the Council working on in the near future?

In 2011, the Council continues its work on helping communities develop and promote regional food systems.  The council partnered with Summit County to create and administer Summit County Beef (see their page).  The council partnered with the Park City Leadership class in creating Summit Community Gardens (see their page).  The council cooperated with Recycle Utah to host the Harvest Festival in Kamas (see Harvest Festival Page) and the council is working on Community Forestry (see page).  Comming up soon, the council is creating a web site to help farmers, home owners, community garden members and local citizens a place to list their fruits, vegatables, honey, and other food products for sale to restaurants, individuals and markets.

General Organization Information

Vision

Uinta Headwaters RC&D promotes partnerships that improve and protect communities and the environment

Mission

Uinta Headwaters RC&D develops and supports projects and partnerships that address the need to conserve and protect our natural resources while improving local economies, environments, and living standards.

Organization

The Uinta Headwaters RC&D Council is a 501 (c) 3 organization tax exempt under the IRS code.  It is a nonprofit corporation chartered by the State ofUtah.  The Council was officially authorized by the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture as the Mountainland RC&D on March 17, 1988.  In January of 2001 the Mountainland RC&D changed its business name to Uinta Headwaters RC&D.  The RC&D program is authorized by Public Law 97-98 and is administered by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Relationship with USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service

Basic support provided to designated RC&D areas by USDA is primarily through the Natural Resources Conservation Service ( NRCS). The NRCS supports the RC&D Councils through referrals to different government agencies and technical support by these agencies. On April 15, 2011 the US Congress cut funds for all RC&D’s across the nation. This cut in benefits removed government personal and office space from each of the RC&D Councils.
